A day at school

From the first bus to the last

The rhythm is the same in every grade, so children know what comes next.

  1. 7:15 a.m.

Step 1: Buses and early care

Buses reach the loop and a teacher greets each child at the door. Children who come early settle in with a book.

  2. 8:10 a.m.

    Step 2: Morning gathering

Each class gathers for a song, a Bible story and the day's plan. On Wednesdays the whole school meets for chapel.

  3. 8:40 a.m.

    Step 3: Reading and math

Reading groups and math come first, when minds are fresh. Writing follows, with a plan and a reader.

  4. 10:30 a.m.

    Step 4: Recess

Time on the field in all but the worst weather.

  5. 11:00 a.m.

Step 5: Science, history and writing

A notebook of experiments, the long timeline of history and a piece of writing that grows through the week.

  6. 12:00 p.m.

    Step 6: Lunch

Lunch at the long tables, with a prayer of thanks first. Families send lunch from home.

  7. 12:40 p.m.

    Step 7: Afternoon lessons

Art, music, Bible and a project that runs for weeks. Older grades have a study period.

  8. 3:00 p.m.

    Step 8: Read-aloud and dismissal

The last stretch of the day is a book the whole class is reading. Then a teacher walks each child to the right bus or car.
